Our mission endures due to generous support from readers like you.

We know you count on Snopes to provide the unvarnished truth, and it’s our mission to deliver the facts – without fear or favor. As the internet’s oldest fact-checking website, we have become an indispensable resource to people around the world.

One of the defining characteristics of Snopes is our independence. We are financially self-sustaining, mainly through our ad revenues and small contributions. Thanks to the generous support of our members, Snopes is not reliant on any single donor or foundation, and we transparently report any contributions we receive over a certain amount.

Whether debunking rumors, unmasking political disinformation campaigns, or confirming that someone really did say that, we stop at nothing to get to the truth. We greatly appreciate your support.

MEMBERSHIPS

What is a Snopes Membership, and what are its perks?

A membership to Snopes is commitment to an ongoing relationship and between Snopes and you. With your backing, we fearlessly report the fact-checks. By joining with a monthly, yearly, or even lifetime membership, you’ll receive our exclusive, members-only Snopes Digest newsletter and gain access to ad-free browsing on Snopes.com.

You’ll also have the satisfaction of supporting the truth in our time of need. The membership perks are added to your existing Snopes account, which are free to create — but you’ll need a membership to make the most of it.

I’m already a member. What happens if I purchase a membership?

Thank you for your support! We would not be here without you. Seriously. Rating: True.

If you’re already a member, you won’t need to pay again until you are due to renew. If a new purchase comes with a fixed membership, we’ll extend your membership term accordingly.

Can I cancel my Snopes membership?

If you are making recurring payments for a Snopes Membership, you can cancel at any time by visiting the account page.

If you make monthly contributions that did not include membership, you will need to contact us directly to cancel the charges. If the charges are through PayPal, then you contact us or can cancel from within your PayPal account.

GIFTS & REDEMPTIONS

What gifts and how do they work?

Have you ever wanted to give the gift of truth to a friend, colleague, or family member? A Snopes membership is the perfect way to do just that. With the purchase of a gift membership, you can grant a loved one’s Snopes account special perks like ad-free browsing, as well as a subscription to the Snopes Digest, our biweekly members-only newsletter.

When you purchase a gift on Snopes.com, the recipient gets an email informing them that you’ve sent them a gift plus a link to our redemption page. This email includes your name and email address, so the receiver knows who to thank.

When visiting the page, a pop-up to claim their gift is rendered with the voucher code auto-populated.

The recipient has one year to redeem their gift voucher.

Do I need to be an existing member to buy a gift?

No, but we’d love it if you were a member! You do, however, need to create a free Snopes account, which you can do during the checkout process.

Are gift purchases auto-renewing?

The gifts are non-renewing, one time purchases for a fixed period of access, typically 1 year.

Can I get the gift delivered on a specific date?

If you select a future delivery date, the email will be sent out automatically at 8AM, 12 PM, or 4PM PT.

Can a recipient redeem multiple gift vouchers for the same offer?

If a recipient redeems a gift voucher and then attempts to redeem a second voucher for the same offer, it will be denied.

I encountered a problem during our after check-out. What should I do?

If you need technical support or to change contact information for the recipient, please contact us.

CONTRIBUTIONS & TIPS

What are tips and how do they work? Are they different from contributions?

As you make a purchase or make a contribution through the Snopes store, you’ll be asked if you want to leave a tip during check out. Think of it as leaving a tip at a restaurant! Any tip you leave on an order in the Snopes store goes directly into the pockets of eligible staff as a special bonus on top of their regular salaries. Learn more about the Snopes Tip Jar. All tips are pooled and split evenly among Snopes staff during each pay period.

You can leave up to 100% of the purchase amount as a tip. We’d love to accept more, but thanks to technical limitations, we’re unable to accommodate tips of over 100% of the value of the purchase price. If you’d like to leave a little bit more, though, you’re always welcome to make a slightly larger contribution to Snopes! While it won’t be a tip, all contributions support our newsroom and help our staff in a slightly less direct way.

Tips can only be left on top of existing contributions or purchases, and it’s not currently possible to leave a tip without making a contribution. We hope to support more ways for readers to show appreciation for their dedicated staffer or favorite fact-checker in the future.

Because they’re paid directly to our staff, tips are non-refundable. If you’d like a refund for an item included in your order, please contact us.

Why not just pay your staff more?

We believe in paying and supporting journalists. All Snopes staffers get a competitive, fair salary and benefits. The Tip Jar is how tipping is intended to work — as an additional appreciation for a job well done, not as a replacement for salary.

Most importantly, many existing supporters ask for ways to support our individual employees and show their appreciation for the risks they take to report the facts. The Tip Jar allows us to do that!

How can I be sure that tips will be going directly to writers?

All accounting is performed by an outside CPA with direct reporting access to the Snopes Store. The CPA reports to the company CFO which is currently an independent member of the board of directors.

Importantly, at any time, several employees at every level of the organization have access to the liabilities report that includes all tips and gift-card obligations.

I really want to help out with a larger contribution to keep you all going. How can I do that?

We would really appreciate your help. Contact us to get the conversation started.

Are contributions to Snopes tax-deductible?

Your support of Snopes does not constitute charitable giving, and your contribution is not eligible for a tax-deduction. However, it does enable Snopes to continue bringing you essential fact-checking to combat misinformation.
