On 30 September 2014, CDC officials confirmed a patient at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital had been diagnosed with Ebola. The patient was later identified as Thomas Eric Duncan of Liberia.
Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, was reported to be in critical condition after his diagnosis was disclosed by public health officials. On the morning of 8 October 2014, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas confirmed in a statement posted to Facebook Duncan had died of the disease:

Thomas Eric Duncan was 42. Relatives with whom Duncan stayed before he fell ill remained in quarantine at the time of his death.
