she returned to her Star City, West Virginia, home after her shift at Wendy's, told her parents she was tired, and went to bed; by the following morning she was gone. Police subsequently reviewed security camera footage from the apartment complex where Skylar and her family live, which revealed that the teenage had climbed out a window around midnight and got into a car belonging to one of her friends. That friend acknowledged to police that she had indeed picked up Skylar that evening but maintained she had dropped her off down the street from Skylar's home an hour later. Skylar last posted to her Twitter account two days before she disappeared, a 5 July 2012 message reading, "You doing sh*t like that is why I will NEVER completely trust you." .

In March 2013, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced that a body found in Greene County, Pennsylvania, two months earlier had been identified as the remains of Skylar Neese.
