On Feb. 11, U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated himself once again on the strength of the nation’s economy under his stewardship, tweeting, “BEST USA ECONOMY IN HISTORY!”

This prompted queries from Snopes readers, who pointed out that just a day earlier, Trump had suggested slashing proposed pay raises for federal employees on the basis of a law that authorizes him to do so in the event of “national emergency or serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare.”
