St. Joseph Public Safety detectives are still waiting on the full autopsy report in the death of Christina Bond, 55, but [have] released the new details.
"She was having trouble adjusting her bra holster, couldn't get it to fit the way she wanted it to. She was looking down at it and accidentally discharged the weapon," said St. Joseph Public Safety Director Mark Clapp.
The incident initially made headlines due to the unusual circumstances surrounding Bond's death, but soon another element was added to the story: Bond was a minor Republican official in Michigan:
Last summer, she was elected as a Republican Precinct Delegate for Saint Joseph Charter Precinct 1.
Her Facebook page is filled with Bible verses, and information about organizing for the Republican Party. Several recent posts complained about Common Core education standards, and about President Barack Obama. Other posts depicted black protesters in Ferguson as dangerous rioters.
This irrelevant piece of information became the centerpiece for several articles that used Bond's death as a (sometimes tongue-in-cheek) argument for stricter gun control laws:
If we can learn anything from Bond's senseless fate, it's that the United States keeping guns too close to its heart is bad for our health. In fact, it can be downright blinding.
In addition to being a Republican, Christina Bond's obituary stated that she was a former MP in the United States Navy, a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, and the mother of two children.
