In January 2015, a line of Fifty Shades of Grey sex toys, including the “Yours and Mine Adult Vibrating Love Ring,” “No Peeking Soft Twin Blindfold Set,” and “Silky Caress Silk Lubricant” hit the shelves at Target retail stores across the U.S. Stores were instructed to place the products in the back of the “adult health section,” but at least one store had the Fifty Shades of Grey items temporarily displayed in a questionable location:

While some Target shoppers were shocked to discover the retail chain was selling sex toys, adult sections in Target stores are not a brand-new phenomenon. In addition to carrying condoms and other contraceptives, Target also sells a variety of personal massagers and lubricants.
The company also noted the Fifty Shades of Grey sex toys are not exclusive to Target stores:
Our stores are carrying a limited assortment of the merchandise. It’s worth noting that [the merchandise] is not exclusive to Target and we directed stores to place the display on a back cap in the adult health area of the store.

Most Snopes assignments begin when readers ask us, “Is this true?” Those tips launch our fact-checkers on sprints across a vast range of political, scientific, legal, historical, and visual information. We investigate as thoroughly and quickly as possible and relay what we learn. Then another question arrives, and the race starts again.
We do this work every day at no cost to you, but it is far from free to produce, and we cannot afford to slow down. To ensure Snopes endures — and grows to serve more readers — we need a different kind of tip: We need your financial support.
Support Snopes so we continue to pursue the facts — for you and anyone searching for answers.
