On 13 October 2016, the Daily Snark web site published an article reporting that New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul had lost a hand when his Samsung Galaxy Note 7 cell phone exploded:

In a shocking turn of unfortunate events, Jason Pierre Paul has reported lost his other hand.

Sources close to the situation say that the NY Giants defensive star who had his left hand mauled in a fireworks accident on July 4th 2015, say his Galaxy Note 7 exploded on Thursday night to live stream the Thursday Night Football game.

“It is believed Mr. Pierre-Paul had the device in his right hand (obviously) while streaming the Chargers vs Broncos game with the Galaxy Note he purchased two weeks ago,” EMT first responder Thisis Satire told reporters. “His first mistake? Watching that boring ass game. Anyways, according to him the phone self ignited and shortly after exploded while still in his hand.”

The above-quoted story reached a much wider audience when it was featured by Facebook in the social media network's Trending stories section:

Although Samsung has experienced much-publicized issues with their Galaxy Note 7 cell phones exploding or catching fire, and Pierre-Paul did lose his right index finger to a fireworks accident in 2015, this story about the NFL player's losing a hand to a malfunctioning cell phone is false. Its source, the Daily Snark, is an entertainment web site that publishes fictional and satirical articles:

The photograph that accompanied the Daily Snark article is also fake. The original image showed Pierre-Paul after he had his right index finger amputated due to the July 2015 fireworks accident, but the Daily Snark altered the photograph to make it seem as if he had injured both his hands:
