U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of just two Muslim women in Congress, is continually subjected to online hate speech and has reportedly received death threats since taking office.

Some of that malice, unsurprisingly, has been stoked by smears and disinformation, but it may shock some readers to learn that calls to violence have even been prompted by postings of tongue-in-cheek news stories presented as “satire.”

As an example, Snopes.com’s Dan Evon and Jordan Liles report on a slew of threatening comments left in response to postings of a single fictional article saying Omar had “walked out” of a 9/11 memorial service.
