In 1953, when telephones were still tethered to the wall and had rotary dials, a phone company executive supposedly predicted a day when individuals would carry their phones around with them “as we carry a watch today.”

Evidence of this seemingly prophetic description of a mobile phone has been making its way around the internet as a scan of a yellowing, 66-year-old newspaper clipping.
