Italy hit a new 24-hour record for coronavirus-related deaths on Friday, reporting that 250 patients had died since the previous day, which had seen a total of 189 fatalities in 24 hours. Thus far, Italy has been the hardest-hit country outside Asia by the pandemic, which is believed to have killed nearly 5,000 people worldwide.

A viral Facebook post authored by an American living in the city of Bergamo in Northern Italy captures the direness of the situation and serves notice on all who read it to take measures to stop the rapid spread of the COVID-19 disease.

“The only way to stop this virus is to limit contagion,” writes Cristina Higgins. “And the only way to limit contagion is for millions of people to change their behavior today.”

Snopes.com’s Dan Evon authenticated the post.
