How worried should we be about the new Wuhan coronavirus that has killed 17 people in China and caused authorities to impose travel restrictions in at least 13 cities there?

The World Health Organization (WHO) says it needs to gather more information before deciding whether to classify Wuhan as a global health emergency. So far, the new strain of coronavirus appears to be less dangerous than the SARS outbreak of 2002-4, but viruses can mutate and grow deadlier.
