For those who don't know, I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere.
In any event, my wife relates the following story to me today:
"A college kid comes into the (grocery) store yesterday. He's in his early twenties, tall white guy. With a bone through his nose. Not a small bone, a big one. Like four inches long. Looked like a rib-bone from a turkey. His comment? "You know, it's only in little hick towns like this that anybody even notices. Back in Chicago, people don't even look twice. Body mods are totally accepted - everyone has them.""
I was suprised to learn that body modding in Chicago has become so common and so extreme that a man with a turkey bone through his nose doesn't even get a second glance. I hesitate to ask what the mayor looks like. I am thinking a Phineas Gage would be considered the norm, perhaps?
