Actress Lauren Bacall, whose legendary Hollywood career spanned more than 70 years, has died at the age of 89.

Bacall was born in the Bronx in 1924 and was on Broadway by the time she was 17. By 19 she had moved up to Hollywood roles, including To Have And Have Not alongside the man who became her first husband, Humphrey Bogart.

Lauren Bacall enjoyed a long and illustrious career in show business. Her iconic looks and sultry voice coupled with her titillating-at-the-time affair with Humphrey Bogart cemented her legend status, particularly in the film noir genre of the era. Bogart married Bacall, his fourth wife, in 1945; they remained married until his death in 1957.

Bacall looked back on her early career and marriage to Bogart in a 2011 interview with Vanity Fair, during which she reflected:

I fairly often have thought how lucky I was ... I knew everybody because I was married to Bogie, and that 25-year difference was the most fantastic thing for me to have in my life.

Her only Oscar nod came in 1996 for a role in The Mirror Has Two Faces with Barbra Streisand, but Bacall received many other notable honors during the course of her lengthy career. Among them was the Cecil B. DeMille Award for Career Achievement from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 1992.

Bacall died of a stroke on 12 August 2014 at her home in the Dakota, the famed Manhattan apartment building near Central Park.
